Ran out of gas at like 4500 rpm, but boy was it fun getting there.Ĭertainly not much top-end like your V-Maxes or things of those nature, but a bike that ran well in the low/mid 13's completely stock in later years. I had one and if you did a few small things to it, they would scare you in the night with the low end torque and brutal stoplight antics, including easily spinning the stock sized 180 rear tire. And it had a lot of nice amenities like an oil cooler, hydraulic clutch, and a shaft drive. It was almost comical little bike, huge motor. So much so that people commented about the physical size of the engine in the bike. In a world where an 1100 was considered a big-bore, the 1400 was king. Once upon a time when I was young and you were still old ( ) the VS1400 was the fastest, biggest, baddest V-Twin cruiser on the market. Never heard anyone refer to an Intruder as a "musclebike"? That's a V-Twin, correct? I always had a soft spot for the style and looks of them. But, realistically, they're pretty bulletproof for the most part. I could pick the front wheel up on my 1400 if I banged second gear and dumped the throttle. They're very floppy in corners and they dive badly at low speeds. But if this is his first bike, the Intruder will be a handful because they just don't corner or handle well due to the rake in the fork. If he likes the little guy he will absolutely love the 1400. It's not a real "family" site, there's porn and typical adult stuff, but lots of Intruder-specific info and generally a good group of guys/gals. If you want more specific knowledge, join I used to go there when I had mine. If you are looking for custom stuff, Seeger Cycle has fork kits to extend the forks and make it a real chopper. If you are looking at stuff, most of the 750/800 parts will also fit with the exception of engine-specific parts. The bike is super-easy to work on compared to the 1400 which has offset carbs and offset linkage for the carbs.Ĭobra makes a backrest removal kit if you don't like the backrest. With the rake of the fork going with narrower bars makes the bike almost impossible to corner at low speeds and the bike will fight you like crazy. MC Enterprises makes a bolt-on highway bar that works decent if you want to stretch out and don't want forwards. Jardine has the best forward controls for the bike but they will set you back about $500. The pegs/controls are pretty far back so if you are over 5'8" you'll feel cramped. Don't waste your money on an aftermarket seat, none of them are better than the OEM one for that bike you are best off to take the stock seat to an upholstery shop and have the cover pulled and the padding beefed up. If you can ditch the 21" front wheel and find a 19" the bike will corner/handle better, but I think you need to change the front brake disk and assembly to make it work. Handle like a dream and the bike will turn into corners very easy. As far as tires, the best set I found for my 1400 were the Avon Venom-X tires. Put in a fresh battery, they tend to eat batteries. Jardine used to have a single sided slip on kit with two mufflers, it's also decent. Not many exhausts for those, but Cobra should still have one that's slip-on only. The Dynojet kit will make a world of difference. You can drill the baffles but the mufflers will sound like crap if you do. Just doing the exhaust will pop and crackle like crazy.

Is he looking to make a solid driver or a custom bike? Mine was a custom job.Įngine-wise, Dynojet kit for the carbs, Cobra two-sided slip ons for exhaust, stock air filter replacement. If it is a hydraulic clutch (my 1400 was) the slave cylinders are suspect but they leak before they go. Very tough motors for the most part, but the 700's were a little prone to blowing up at higher revs. No transmission problems that I remember, though. As with most bikes, they were lean out of the factory. The change came because the bike did not handle as well with the 21" wheel. IIRC those earlier models came with a 21" front wheel, where later models came with a 19" front wheel.

On those bikes, the best thing you can do is put decent tires on it. However, most of the body parts and bolt-ons will be the same for the 700-800 models, I don't think Suzi changed the bike itself a lot. The bike was changed to a 750 and then an 800 within a few years. That bike was a horse.Īs far as your 700, engine parts are kinda scarce. It was the last year for the 4 spd trans. I wish I had a digi-pic of it, it was a one of a kind. I owned a 96 VS1400 for many, many years and knew the bike like the back of my hand.
